Motor Insurance: Third Party Bodily Injury and Death Cover

Being involved in a car accident is never a good experience. It is even more traumatic when there is injury or death of a third-party pedestrian and you are held liable by law enforcement authorities.

It is in such circumstances that Motor Insurance Third Party bodily injury or death cover becomes necessary. This benefit is currently found on all Motor Insurance policies from Road Traffic Act cover, Full Third Party cover and Comprehensive cover in Zimbabwe. Third Party Bodily Injury or Death cover helps protect you from the cost of legal liability to pay compensation for injury or death you have accidentally caused to someone.

Some of the costs it pays for include:

1. Medical bills: For the hospitalization and related medical care of the third party up to your policy limit. This limit will also include cover for things like prosthetic limbs for the third party where necessary. As such, it is important to have adequate cover that would be able to minimise any out of pocket expenss for you should you unfortunately hit a pedestrian without medical aid cover.
2. Lost wages: Usually where the third party is seriously injured and unable to work or unfortunately dies, an amount determined in a court of law or in agreement with your insurer can be paid for their lost income or what their surviving dependents would have derived in line with the limits on your policy.
3. Funeral costs: Pays for costs associated with funeral and burial where a third party is killed as a result of the accident.

So in the case of an accident where you have injured a pedestrian what should you do:

1. Secure the pedestrian out of harms way where possible by getting them out of the road.
2. Get help for the pedestrian by calling an ambulance if necessary or call us and we will assist in getting an ambulance on site.
3. Allow the police to process the scene as they will determine if you were liable for the accident. Do not rush to admit liability before the police process the scene as you may not be aware of all the circumstances eg if someone slipped whilst at a road crossing, if someone was pushed or they were not distracted on a phone etc.
4. If your car is damaged and cannot be driven, we will assist you with having it towed to a repairer if it is on comprehensive cover.
5. Where you are deemed to have been liable, the insurer may select to communicate directly with the third party or their family with regards to medical bills etc. We will inform you of all that will happen till discharge or in the unfortunate event of death till burial is finalised.
